Mpofu

"Mpofu and the Lion"

by "Mpofu"

In the Sindebele language of the Matabele of Zimbabwe "Mpofu" is the name of the giant antelope of the bushveld, the Eland. The eland is a favourite prey of lions but here Mpofu turns the tables on the largest carnivore of Africa.

.......... "On our approach, a lioness charged to about 30 yards from us, and the rest of them gave a pretty intimidating display of mock charging, snarling and growling.  We were under strict instructions not to shoot to kill unless told to do so....."

"It wasn't like this last year ... "

by "Bakes"

It wasn't like this last year ....

Not knowing where the water ended we elected to battle on in the direction we were headed, for one hour we waded through that bloody swamp with Gary and I taking turns carrying Rip (short- legged dogs and deep water don't mix). Our legs grew heavier as the "quick walk around the lake" turned into an endurance test. We didn't loose our sense of humour though, as we laughed at the situation we had got ourselves into .......

HUMOUR

"This Turkey Doesn't Trot!"
by Ann Horsman

It was a perfect day to take on turkeys for the first time.  I drew a tag with my boyfriend for Missaukee County where he had some hunting land in an area that also had a lot of surrounding state land. Neither of us had tried turkey hunting before so we were both full of anticipation. It was a blue bird spring day and we had tried hard to locate some birds since early morning.  Giving up, we were driving back to our camp on his property for a break.  On the way, while driving past some heavily wooded state land we saw a large tom near the road.   He was very beautiful and looked as if he were glowing in a beam of sunlight coming through the trees .....
